The leader of the province of Ontario, Doug Ford, whose government aired the Reagan ad in US markets this week, wrote on X that the both countries are "stronger together", while President Trump posted his own string of online messages promoting the alleged benefits of tariffs.
"Our neighbor and the United States are allies, partners and friends. Leader Ronald Reagan knew that we are stronger together," Ford stated alongside the Reagan video. "Bless our nation and bless the United States of America."

The deterioration in relationships reportedly stems from a 60-second television advertisement featuring President Reagan's broadcast stating that "trade barriers harm every American worker"
Trump responded on Truth Social without proof that Canadian officials had somehow run a "fraudulent" and "false" advertisement, and announced that "every trade discussion with our northern neighbor are hereby ended"

Chris Sands, the director of the Canadian research center at Johns Hopkins School, indicated the collapse in negotiations simply formalizes a unproductive situation
"Can we stop negotiations? Certainly, you can end discussions about steel, aluminum, energy, all of it," he said
