The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
