Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
