"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: I also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Several celebrated supporters have publicly begged for the honor.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a close trio. Their music videos often depict them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"So everyone are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Award Nod

The group have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes follow endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That newfound resilience called for a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The band's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

However the band will consistently be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
