Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations suggest the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not aware of any injuries in association with the event," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A high-ranking official commented the attack left him speechless and had to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
